Reader’s Question:
My boyfriend’s been paying for expensive car insurance. I’m afraid that I might be charged for the same very expensive amount. What do insurers look in whenever they determine a driver’s car insurance rates?

There are several factors that car insurance providers use when determining a person’s insurance rates. So I don’t think that your insurance premiums will be the same with your boyfriend because I don’t believe that you have exactly the same attributes when compared with your boyfriend.
To give you a clearer picture, here are the factors that most insurers use for setting car insurance rates:
- Driving history, the better it is then the better your insurance rates can be. However, you must remember that car insurance providers will only look at your driving records for three years back.
- Your car, this includes the make, model, and year. If let’s say your car is old, then you would be paying lower insurance rates for that.
- Territory, this includes where you parked and drive your car. If your parking place is safe then you may be getting lower insurance rates. If your place of residence has lower crime rates, then your car insurance rates may also be lower.
- Accidents in the past, if you were never involved in any accident, then you don’t have to worry that much about paying expensive car insurance rates.
- Gender, female drivers like you get lower car insurance rates.
- Age, teen drivers and those who are not more than 25 years old are usually charge with higher insurance rates.
- Credit score, you must have good credit score since this would help you get better car insurance rates.
Those are the factors that car insurance providers usually use. Now that you know them, I guess you have a clearer idea on how to get cheap car insurance by now.
